The national network, founded by Victor and Olena Pinchuk to support Ukraine’s Security and Defense Forces, continues to expand. From now on, an innovative RECOVERY rehabilitation center for Ukraine’s defenders is operating in Chernihiv. Each year, more than 1,000 service members will be able to receive free rehabilitation services here.
The RECOVERY project is an example of a successful partnership between the private sector and the state, where philanthropists create innovative rehabilitation centers based on public medical institutions. The center in Chernihiv, like the rest in the national RECOVERY network, is equipped according to global standards of technological advancement and inclusivity.
Victor Pinchuk, founder of the RECOVERY project, stated:
“We are opening the 16th RECOVERY center, but that’s just formally, because in some of them, we have launched a second phase, so in total, we have already opened rehabilitation centers 20 times. They are working very efficiently, and more than 22,000 heroes have already undergone recovery here. Once we reach full capacity, the network will be able to rehabilitate 26,000 service members per year. That is a very large number on a national scale, and in this sense, we are satisfied. We hope that our example will spread, that other businesspeople and philanthropists will also start establishing rehabilitation centers according to these standards.”
The list of innovative equipment and devices in the Chernihiv RECOVERY center covers the entire spectrum of functional impairments, including those resulting from gunshot wounds and blast injuries. Physical rehabilitation rooms are equipped with virtual reality devices that provide feedback to the patient.
The entire center is completely barrier-free for patients: wide doorways, no thresholds, medical non-slip linoleum flooring, handrails in corridors, inclusive sanitary facilities with enough space for wheelchair users.
The treatment and rehabilitation area includes:
- A large and a small physical rehabilitation and mechanotherapy hall
- Two halls for individual sessions
- Physical therapy and laser therapy rooms
- Assistive technology, psychological support, and occupational therapy offices
- A massage room
- Offices for a speech and language therapist and a physical therapist
- Offices for the department head and senior nurse, a spacious guest area, and service rooms
The inpatient department is equipped with 12 wards with 45 beds. Each ward has electric functional beds and furniture for a comfortable and convenient stay for patients. It also includes a duty doctor’s office, a nurse’s station, a treatment room, a communication hub, and inclusive restrooms.
Hanna Anisovets, Head of the Chernihiv RECOVERY Rehabilitation Center, said:
“We do not practice overprotection because people are independent—and they should be. Our patients, even if they arrive in wheelchairs, can fully take care of themselves. All doors, entrances, and exits are accessible, and there are modern elevators. The Chernihiv center has no physical barriers—and our team works to ensure there are no psychological ones either.”
A multidisciplinary rehabilitation team will restore service members after injuries at the Chernihiv RECOVERY center. It consists of physical and rehabilitation medicine doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists, speech and language therapists, and a psychologist. Thanks to high-tech equipment and qualifications, they provide high-quality, accessible, and evidence-based rehabilitation care.
Besides Chernihiv, innovative RECOVERY centers provide free services in: Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk region (three centers), Kyiv (two centers), Lutsk, Lviv, Odesa (two centers), Poltava, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasym Chernivtsi. Overall, the national RECOVERY network has already provided rehabilitation assistance to 22,000 patients.
